Legal Assistant – Insurance Defence | Toronto

In this position of Legal Assistant, Insurance Defence, you will participate in the day to day handling of insurance defence matters, including casualty, accident benefits and property damage claims. You will provide administrative support to a team of professionals and your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: the drafting and assembly of correspondence and court documents, calendar management and communications with legal professionals, clients, court staff and other business professionals on routine issues.  The ideal candidate for this position has a strong work ethic, exceptional problem-solving skills and is comfortable working within a team.

Summary of Responsibilities: 

  • Preparing and editing of correspondence and legal documents, including but not limited to: reporting letters, routine correspondence and pleadings
  • Assembly of various material, including but not limited to: mediation, pre-trial and case conference briefs and motion records
  • Ensuring all physical and electronic filing is organized and up-to-date
  • Scheduling various events, including but not limited to: discoveries, motions, mediations and settlement conferences
  • Arranging discoveries including the drafting of the necessary letters and pleadings
  • Assisting in preparation for trials and arbitrations including arranging for witnesses and conduct money
  • Assisting in preparation for significant file events including, but not limited to: discoveries, motions, mediations and pre-trials
  • Ensuring court and tribunal filings are completed in an accurate and timely manner
  • Liaising with clients, opposing counsel, courts, tribunals and other business professionals
  • Management of client files including opening and closing activities
  • Using a tickler system to organize bring forwards, reminders, and to track status on files and administrative activities
  • Arranging defence medical assessments including transportation and translations services
  • Various administrative support tasks including, but not limited to: managing incoming mail and emails; ensuring adherence to client protocols and firm procedures, cheque requisitions and dictation
  • Other general duties as required

Core Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in insurance defence handling a high volume of casualty, accident benefits (including LAT, priority and loss transfer) an property damage claims
  • Knowledge of the SABS and the Rules of Civil Procedure
  • Experience in drafting pleadings
  • Experience in trial and arbitration preparation
  • Strong attention to detail, with thorough proofreading and editing skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills, with ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting tight deadlines
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and client service skills
  • Advanced technical abilities, including experience with: MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Proficient in the use of Time Matters and PrimaFact preferred, experience using Lighthouse and Tymetrix is an asset but not required
